SANDLER GETS A HOLD OF A BLOWDRYER

The waiting game has started again on the carpet as the first major movie premiere invaded Hollywood since "What Happens In Vegas". Last night Adam Sandler and crew headed down the carpet for the World Premiere of "You Don't Mess With the Zohan".

The waiting was as bad as there were limos lined up 5 deep to drop off A, B, C and D list actors, well maybe not D List Actors. The majority of the cast showed up sans Alec Mapa, Chris Rock and the much anticipated Mariah Carey. African-American mainstay event photographer Bill Jones was a bit upset as he said his main reason for coming to the premiere was to shoot Miss Mariah Carey Cannon. Oh well, we still had Adam and Rob on the carpet.

Only problem with Mr. Sandler is he's either chewing gum, not looking at photographers or just walking fast through the carpet. Last night was no exception as he walked briskly through the red carpet. He did take a moment to stop and sit in one of the hairstyling chairs that were on the carpet for props.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: RTL SUPERSTAR, GERMANY

Aired live Saturday, April 5th on RTL, the show opened with an introduction clip recapping Mariah's hits and success with "Touch My Body". They then showed a clip of Mariah meeting the 8 contestants earlier today. One of the female contestants (Linda) sang a few lines of "Hero" to which Mariah commented that she liked the tone of her voice. A male contestant sang a few lines of "Vision of Love" to Mariah and said he was a big fan. Mariah advised the contestants to really love what they're doing and that otherwise they shouldn't be doing it.

The female contestants are doing Mariah songs and the male contestants are singing "Take That" songs.

Linda Teodosiu went first and sang "Hero". The clip prior to the performance showed her being very excited about the song choice. After the not-so-great critique by the judges, Mariah came out on stage, wearing Gucci pants and a black top and chatted a bit with the host. She said: "I don't like to critique people, it's very tough for me. I wanted to give my little bit of advice as an artist." She said she didn't think it was fair of her to critique the contestants and that it was the judges' job. Mariah also said that she enjoys listening to other artists singing songs she's written and made popular. Asked about Linda's performance, Mariah said she heard it backstage and thought it was beautiful.

The rest of the contestants sang the following songs; they all seemed excited about getting to sing songs by Mariah.
Rania Zeriri - "Against All Odds".
Monika Ivkic - "Without You".
Stella Salato - "Dreamlover".

At the end of the show, Mariah sang "Touch My Body" in a short black dress. Afterwards, she was asked which of the contestants was her favorite, but she said she's too nice to pick among them and that they were all amazing."

HQ PHOTOS: MARIAH AT JAPANESE BASEBALL GAME

Below are high-quality pictures of Mariah throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the start of a Japanese professional baseball game between the Yomiuri Giants and the Rakuten Eagles at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, Wednesday, May 28, 2008.

[VIEW FULL SET](+83 images)

A LEAGUE OF HER OWN
Regardless of what kind of grip she used for the ceremonial first pitch at a Japanese baseball game early this morning, Mariah Carey threw fans a curveball with her wardrobe. Taking the mound before the Yomiuri Giants and Rakuten Eagles squared off, the former Bedford resident sported a midriff-baring satin jacket, jean shorts and sunglasses from Kanye West's reject pile. And strangely, I think she pulled it off.

After LaTroy Hawkins blews last night's game for the Yankees, it's only a matter of time before the team signs Carey to a lucrative deal. Hey, she's already got more hits this year than Morgan Ensberg. Then again, there's that whole Derek Jeter thing. It was hard enough to patch up his friendship with A-Rod, so maybe bringing an ex-girlfriend into the mix isn't such a good idea.

MARIAH CAREY'S DAY AT THE BALLPARK
Enjoying her time overseas in Japan, Mariah Carey was busy tossing out the first pitch at a baseball game at the Tokyo Dome on Wednesday (May 28). Wearing a pair of heels for her mound duties, Mimi was all smiles as she posed with the players before the Yomiuri Giants took on the Rakuten Golden Eagles.

As previously reported by Gossip Girls, Mariah arrived at Narita International Airport on Sunday alongside her 27-year-old husband Nick Cannon. The couple, who have said they are "delighted" with their newly married status, plan on attending the MTV Japan awards on Friday (May 30).

MARIAH GETS 20TH RHYTHMIC TOP 10 WITH "BYE BYE"

Mariah notches her 20th career Rhythmic top 10 as "Bye Bye" rises 11-9, extending her record among females; runner-up Janet has tallied 15 top 10s. Carey also moves within one of Ludacris for the chart's all-time best top 10 total.

The format icon claimed her first top 10 (and first of seven No. 1s) with "Dreamlover." Of the acts with at least 10 top 10s at the format, only Janet and R. Kelly have had head starts over Carey. Before "Dreamlover" bowed in August 1993, R. Kelly launched with Public Announcement on the premier Nielsen BDS-fed Rhythmic chart dated Oct. 3, 1992, while Janet first appeared with "That's the Way Love Goes" in May 1993.

MARIAH MAKES MORE THAN A CAMEO IN ZOHAN

"Hi guys!

So I just got back from the Toronto Premiere of You Don't Mess With The Zohan (I am the lead promo hair stylist for the movie here in Toronto) and Mariah Carey makes more than a cameo in the movie!

Let me start off by saying the movie is hilarious and everyone must go to see it! I cannot remember the last time I heard an entire audience laugh so hard and at so many times throughout the movie!

The lead Zohan, played by Adam Sandler, is a terrorist who wants to become a hair dresser in NYC. He wears in virtually every other scene of the movie a Mariah Carey T-shirt, the promo shot from Rainbow but also the promo T-shirt from The Adventures of Mimi Tour where she is wearing the purple baby doll dress.

In about three-fourths into the movie, Mariah makes her first appearance. Everyone is at the Hacky Sack game in a large stadium and after the initial announcements on players and special guests, they announce Mariah Carey is there to sing the national anthem. She does, and sings a couple of lines, incredibly of course! She is wearing a hot pink mini dress with a ridiculous amount of cleavage (which they mock later - Mariah fully acknowledging and making fun of with). She looks magnificent, not as slender as she is right now but all in all healthy, glowing and happy! Cut to a few minutes later and I am surprised to see Mariah appear again!

This time in her dressing room being prepped by her hair stylist (real life stylist Lew Ablahani) while a fight breaks out. It cuts back to her many times until almost the final credits and every time they cut back to her she is seemingly so more and more like a diva! She pokes fun at herself as well as others in the movie. All in all, Mariah played an excellent job in doing herself or at least as most people perceive her to be.

MARIAH DENIES SURGERY RUMOURS

Singer Mariah Carey has blasted reports her newly slender figure is the result of plastic surgery, insisting her weight loss is down to diet and exercise. Earlier this year, the R+B superstar unveiled a svelte new look when she began doing promotional work for her eleventh studio album, E=MC2, sparking speculation she had gone under the knife to lose a remarkable 32 pounds (14.5 kilograms).

But the Hero hitmaker, 38, is adamant it was an all-natural regime that helped her shed the pounds. She says, "I know the U.K. is freaking out that I had some crazy plastic surgery done, but... honestly, it's working out and diet. Look at what I'm eating right now: olives! It makes me upset that people think I've had surgery, 'cause let's discuss how annoying the dieting process was. My girls will eat really good fried food, and I also love sweet plantain and rice and peas, but I can't eat it! If I eat it, it's small!"

DIVA SMACKDOWN ENDS WITH INGENUES ON RISE

It was billed as the Great Diva Smackdown of '08. In the space of just nine weeks, three of the biggest female stars of the rock era - Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Madonna - released new studio albums. It was like three summer blockbusters hitting your local multiplex in a nine-week span, with the added (and admittedly sexist and sophomoric) appeal of an all-star catfight. Meow!

So who made the most divalicious showing? All three albums - Jackson's Discipline, Carey's E=MC2 and Madonna's Hard Candy - debuted at #1, though only Carey's improved on the opening-week sales performance of her previous studio album. (Indeed, Carey had the biggest opening of her career.) Also, only Carey's album managed to hold on to the #1 spot for a second week. Indeed, at least at this early stage, Carey's album has sold more copies than Madonna's and Jackson's albums combined.

In terms of raw numbers, E=MC2 has sold 887,000 copies in its first five weeks, making it the #3 best-seller so far in 2008. Hard Candy has sold 428,000 copies after three weeks, putting it 22nd for the year. Discipline has sold 385,000 copies after 12 weeks, putting it 26th. (Divalicious? That's divalousy - though Jackson is launching a tour in September that should give the album a second wind.)

The outcome has been similar on the digital download front, though here Madonna is out front. "4 Minutes", the pop icon's collaboration with Justin Timberlake, has sold 1,429,000 downloads in nine weeks. Carey's "Touch My Body" has sold 970,000 in eight weeks. Jackson's "Feedback" slips out of the top 200 this week, after selling 608,000 in its first 19 weeks.

But now that the diva derby is moving into the follow-up singles phase I can't help noticing that several ingénues are moving up on these long-established pop queens. Leona Lewis' Spirit has sold 618,000 copies in six weeks, putting it #8 for the year-to-date. Four other debut albums by young female artists rank among the top 30 of 2008. (All four albums were released prior to this year, but this ranking counts only sales since Jan. 1.) Taylor Swift's Taylor Swift is #5, Sara Bareilles' Little Voice is #12, Colbie Caillat's Coco is #16 and Jordin Sparks' Jordin Sparks is #30. And Duffy may well join them on that list. Her Rockferry opens at #4 on this week's chart.

MARIAH CAREY EMPLOYS "DRINK HOLDER"

Mariah Carey is such a diva, she hires somebody just to hold her drink and straw, it was claimed yesterday. Her vocal coaches David and Carrie Grant, who judged on Fame Academy, said the aide was part of a 30-strong entourage the singer, 38, brought to one session.

Carrie told Virgin radio: "There was a woman that held her drink with a straw. That's all she does, flies around the world as a drinks holder."

ZULU TATTOO

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, I spoke with famed tattoo artist Zulu, whose celebrity clientele include newlyweds Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, Janet Jackson (who will begin her "Discipline" tour in September), Christina Aguilera, Bruce Willis, Rosie O'Donnell and Dennis Rodman. Zulu and his wife, Khani Zulu, own and operate the prestigious Zulu Tattoo studio, located in a fashionable west L.A. district. In the 15 years he's had the studio, Zulu has become a celebrity in his own right; as a tattoo artist, he is booked a year in advance, but you can always get a quicker appointment with members of his talented staff. He's been called in by major Hollywood movies studios to sketch temporary tattoos on actors such as Wesley Snipes on the set of the film "Blade". (He uses an alcohol based dye that won't sweat off.)
The 44 year old artist, formerly Jerome Anthony Beck, took his last name from the South African warrior king, emperor Shaka Zulu. He is a self described island boy who grew up in the Florida Keys. After graduating from Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota Florida, Zulu worked as a graphic artist/commercial illustrator; he worked for a firm but found that the work was not feeding his soul. He began tattooing as a hobby, and because of his elaborate designs and precision with the needle, it quickly escalated into a career. Since his clients fly in from around the world, Zulu plans to open a studio in France called Zulu Tatouage.

Ok, lets have the dish on Mariah Carey and her new husband, Nick Cannon.
Mariah was really cool. She didn't really want to talk about what was happening because I think she was calling before they got married. They said, this is very confidential, we don't want this to get out. Tattooing so many celebrities, you have to be discreet. They let me know what they wanted and I drew it up ahead of time and they approved some drawings and when the day came, we went out to their beautiful house in Beverly Hills.

We sat and talked about refining the drawings and they gave me some lunch. Mariah was really mellow, real confident, not overbearing in the least, she was polite but she knew what she wanted. She was assertive, which was cool. She decided she wanted a butterfly because she's all about butterfly. It was her very first tattoo. She sat for it and didn't flinch. She's a tough cookie. She found me on the web, and probably through her celebrity circle.

It was Nick Cannon's first tattoo as well. He got some script on his back. It was a really good experience for everyone, especially for the first tattoo, because that tends to make people a little bit nervous. They did well, like people who had a million tattoos.

MORE MARIAH & NICK STORIES

  • MARIAH KEEPS NICK ON CHECK
Nick Cannon is learning the hard way that being Mr. Mariah Carey isn't all its cracked up to be. While in Vegas this weekend for the opening of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods with pals P.Diddy and Quincy Jones, he got a call from Mimi demanding that he come back home.

"He was summoned home by her at 1 in the morning," a source said. "He didn't look happy about it." Mimi is a diva with just about everyone in her life, so why should she be any different with her new (and much younger) hubby. Sounds like a lifetime of happiness ahead! Or divorce court in two months, you decide.

  • MARIAH CAREY AND NICK CANNON: MATCH MADE IN CLOSET
Happy couple Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon keep getting photographed in identical outfits. It's like they're going to the senior prom every day. Honestly, what is it with couples that dress alike? Okay, the occasional matching outfit can be a funny way of realizing how right you are for each other, but when you wake up in the morning and have to discuss color coordinating, you're taking things too far!

Although, we're sure with the leash Mrs. Mariah has got on Mr. Carey, he's not really allowed to stray at all - especially to colors that don't look good on her. However, the same outfits are even ridiculous for a diva like Mimi. If you're in love with your style twin it's like you're too lazy to masturbate. Show the world you both really are a match by wearing different clothes.

    THE SURREAL WORLD OF MC

The nicest diva in the music industry, Mariah Carey is back with a vengeance, boasting a brand-new album and a slender physique. She talked to a tipsy Jessica Huie about the stress of dieting, the importance of friends and her relationship with God.

Last night Mariah Carey got me drunk. I'd turned up at a studio located by the Hudson River, in Manhattan, for an 11:30pm interview with one of the globe's biggest superstars. Three hours later... I was still waiting. Gazing out from the 14th floor of the Hudson Studios, I took in the breathtaking magnificence of the New York skyline by night, mentally quizzing the woman whose comeback from an emotional breakdown seven years ago sensationally saw her The Emancipation of Mimi album sell 10 million copies worldwide, cementing her iconic status in pop history. Exciting stuff. Despite the jet lag that has crept in 24 hours after landing at JFK, I couldn't wait to get a peek inside the wonderful world of MC.

At 3am I get the okay to go through for the interview. Three French journalists are waiting behind me - one dozing on the couch, another downing espressos to ward off exhaustion, the third obviously annoyed that Mariah's publicist has given me the okay to take his slot and conduct the interview before sleep gets the better of me.

I'm asked to sit behind a large black screen on a director's stool. Mariah is sitting on the other side. I feel like I'm about to audition for American Idol. I'm handed a glass of wine, which I down quickly in the hope that the alcohol will awaken my dreary senses a little.

I'm called in, and there she is, a slimmed-down 5ft 9in vision of loveliness, even at this ridiculous hour. Don't believe the hype or the paparazzi's unflattering tabloid pictures: Mariah Carey is gorgeous in the flesh, although after my interview I'm not altogether convinced that she knows it.

She stands to give me a hug and I'm bounced by her ample bosom. However, aside from this one surgical enhancement, there's no evidence of the alleged £150,000 liposuction that is supposed to have resulted in Mariah's fabulous new body. "I know the whole UK is freaking out that I had some crazy plastic surgery done, but hit this," and she motions for me to hit her thigh, which is rock-hard from hours of lunges and toning squats. "Honestly. It's working out and diet. Look at what I'm eating right now: olives! It makes me upset that people think I've had surgery 'cos let's discuss how annoying the dieting process was. My girls will eat really good fried food, and I also love sweet plantain and rice and peas, but I can't eat it! If I eat it, it's this small [she signals to a coin-size portion]. Do you want some wine?" I respond that I do, and so my professionalism (along with my sobriety) begins its speedy decline.

Half an hour later and my carefully planned line of questioning is forgotten. The situation isn't helped by the fact that we are sitting in a darkened room lit only by scores of scented tea lights that, while creating a lovely chilled-out ambience, make is impossible for me to see my notebook. Mariah's lovely assistant Jim appears and signals that my time is up. "No, Jim we're not done! It's my fault, I've been distracting her - we need five more minutes."

A tipsy half an hour later, and we're talking men. I ask MC if she has someone, and she responds: "I don't know... do you have someone?", which prompts a conversation into whether you ever really have somebody or if a relationship is merely a transient thing that is never assured. Fascinating stuff, even at 3am. Despite my being happily ensconced in a relationship, MC's trying to set me up with her nephew. "He's 33 and has just graduated from Harvard Law School. He was even voted one of the world's most eligible bachelors... you'd be perfect together!" What I really want to know, however, is why, at 37, with beauty, brains and a wicked sense of humour, Mariah herself hasn't been snapped up.

I ask her if she wants children. "I do if it's right, I don't if it's wrong. I'm probably so much more insecure than you. I don't know that I've ever been loved or ever felt loved or fulfilled emotionally, and I know that I'm able to give that. But I don't know if I'm able to receive it. Maybe I just don't feel like anyone could ever care about me that way... I don't know. I don't mean to say that in a weird way, but I'm so grateful for Jesus Christ in my life. I'm so grateful for the Lord in my life. Because if you're not ashamed to admit that you know God, you feel like, no matter what, you're going to be Okay, 'cos there is one who loves you. Maybe He's not of this world, and maybe I'm not supposed to be loved by someone of this world, because maybe I'm too difficult. I can accept that I'm a bad girl... maybe I'm not worth it."

Though we've just met, it's hard to hear this beautiful woman speak about herself in this way, and the Pinot Grigo makes me want to give her a hug, and I feel my eyes welling up. This is certainly the most bizarre interview of my career, but also the most real. I remind her that the best things in life are hard work, while thinking how hard it is to be a woman.

She continues: "I wish I could be with a person who was exactly the same as me racially. Someone who would understand and not judge me. I believe that he's still out there. But if there's someone who just cares about me because I'm a famous person, it's freaking ridiculous."

Trust is a huge issue for Mariah, and so it was than when an interview with our very own Jasmine Dotiwala, who heads up MTV Base, resulted in a meeting of minds between the two inspirational women of colour, a very special friendship was born. When I mention I know Jasmine, Mariah instantly relaxes and touchingly explains: "She's just such a good person. It's so rare for me to find people that I feel close to. We met during an interview and we just had so much in common. She didn't expect to like me, but we are so similar and I really care about and love her. We spend Christmas together now, we are family" She breaks into song: "I've got all my sisters with me! She is my heart, and nobody can take her place. Do you want some more wine?"

Two more close friends of MC's are Rachel, who sits in on our chat for the duration, and her nine-year-old daughter Sade. "Rachel's daughter is the coolest girl ever, and she's one of my best friends. She's a beautiful girl, she laughs at me 'cos she knows that I'm eternally 12. She's like 'What are you talking about? MC's not my auntie she's my friend!' We are like dumb and dumber, in fact, no, I'm dumber and dumber!"

I question whether it's being well into her 30s that has allowed MC the confidence to revel in her sexuality on the new album. "Are you freaking kidding me? I'm 12!," is all she'll say, explaining that she no longer celebrates birthdays, preferring to view them as "anniversaries". So how will she celebrate her imminent anniversary? "Honestly, I'd like to be 29 forever. I'm gonna be with Jasmine and friends somewhere fabulous. I'm so excited about that."

Despite the insecurities that MC admits still dog her, the album itself, E=MC2, is a sure-fire winner, and an anthem for sexually empowered confident women in control. The first single, "Touch My Body" is a catchy send-up that sees a needy geek entranced by her svelte form as she invites him to "wrestle her to the floor". As diva-ish as they come (after all she thinks nothing of keeping the press waiting until the early hours of the morning for a 20-minute conversation), she's a fabulous diva, famous for having no clue as to the number of bathrooms in her home. I wonder if the fact that she's rarely spotted in the front row of the Milan fashion shows, or even alongside Beyonce and Jay-Z at the BET Awards, is a deliberate attempt to maintain the removed mystique of her stardom.

"I do award shows if they are all about me!" she laughs heartily. "I do them if I'm gonna have a promotional moment, but they're a pain in the ass. When you're on TV, you've got a camera in your face, and I don't want to deal with that, it's annoying. They're in your face, they're not even showing your waist, they're right in your face with the worst lighting ever! It's like... why? But it is what it is. Again, God had brought me a long, long way. I know it's a lot to do with growing up in suburban America where you don't feel that normal love."

Whether or not there is a man deserving of Mariah's love in her life, she's adored by millions, has a yacht in Capri, a new home in the Bahamas, wealth beyond her wildest dreams, and a set of genuinely good friends. Then there's the new album, which is full of club-banging summer anthems and sprinklings of T-Pain and Damian Marley to being the MC sound bang into 2008. It's sure to meet, if not surpass, the dizzy success of the last record.

Her biggest blessing, however, is her relationship with God. I ask Mariah if she ever reflects on the strength of character it must have taken to overcome the breakdown she suffered years ago in such spectacular fashion. "I just look back and say, 'Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord for getting me through my life and delivering me, for giving me strength when I almost lost it all.' I can't take credit for myself, you know why? In the word of the song 'My Saving Grace' on the Charmbracelet album. Whatever anybody else ever says, I say 'I still exist because You catch my every fall'."

Ninety minutes after out interview began, we say goodbye, and I come face to face with the irate French journalist. Avoiding eye contact, I stumble back out into the brisk New York night air and smile. I'm not certain whether it was actually me who conducted the interview or Mariah herself. Regardless. I feel I've had an insight into one of music's greatest icon. It won't be an interview I forget - I shall always remember the night Mariah Carey got me drunk.

MARIAH CAREY PLANNING SECOND WEDDING TO NICK CANNON

Mariah Carey is already planning a second wedding to husband Nick Cannon; and this time, the world-renowned diva plans to make her nuptials an extravagant event, according to a source close to the singer. "It's going to be held in New York City in the next six weeks. Picture a wedding on the scale of Liza Minelli's and you'll be on the right track," said the source.

Mariah, 38, last week told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that the second wedding would be next year; and the guests at her secret ceremony in the Bahamas were "mainly people there to do my hair and help me with the dress".

The source adds, "She wants over 2,000 guests and the budget will be well over $4 million and she'll have at least 14 bridesmaids." One name already confirmed on the guest list is fiery British supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Is Mariah Carey one of the greatest pop artists of all time? asked Ken Levine in Huffingtonpost.com. For most music fans, that's a laughable proposition, yet "Touch My Body", the latest single from her album E=MC2, marks 18 no. 1 songs for the pop diva - second only to the Beatles. This means that the woman who gave us Glitter now has more chart-topping hits than Elvis Presley. Not surprisingly, the song that put the nail in the coffin includes such cringe-worthy lyrics as "I'll hug you tighter than my favorite jeans".

But as Elvis himself said, 50 million - or in Carey's case, 61.5 million - fans can't be wrong, said Jody Rosen in Slate.com. Considering that Carey made her debut less than 20 years ago, she deserves a little respect from all "the haters". Her voice - "that cyclonic force capable of hurtling unnumbered octaves, shattering crystalware, and inducing musicogenic epileptic seizures in Japanese women" - has influenced countless contemporary pop singers, for good or ill.

All this tells us is that no. 1 hits are no longer a signifier of true cultural influence, said Mario Tarradell in The Dallas Morning News. Carey's recent success is a product of the collapsing music industry and the rise of digital downloads. As one of a dwindling number of big-name acts, she has less competition. Still, if she surpasses the Beatles' record of 20 no. 1s, I'll shed a tear.

MARIAH CAREY'S MAGIC TO STAY FOREVER

Pop superstar Mariah Carey's comeback didn't quite begin with her latest release E=MC2. The new album merely establishes the comeback she began in 2005 with Emancipation of Mimi and now makes her a force to reckon with. Through the 1990s, Carey dominated the music charts only to have her personal and professional life crash around 2001 with the release of her movie Glitter. It took her a good four years to get her life back together and regain her superstar status.

Carey is the best-selling female artist of all time. She is the only artist to have a No. 1 hit every single year of the 90s. She is also blessed with a seven-octave voice and unlike most other pop artists, she co-writes and co-produces most of her material. Carey got her big break while she was working as a waitress in New York. Columbia Records chief Tommy Mottola got a demo of hers at a party and immediately signed her. He later married her, though 20 years older, and they eventually got divorced.

Her debut album featured no less than four No. 1 singles and won her the Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. She continued churning out hits from her next five albums Emotions (91), Unplugged (92), Music Box (93), Daydream (95), and Butterfly (97).

Then in 2001 things started to go really bad for Carey. She signed a mega record-setting $80 million five-year contract with Virgin Records only to have it revoked later. After having unprecedented success throughout the 1990s and dating famous men like baseball superstars, she broke down, displaying some strange behaviour.

Her lowest point came when she shocked the MTV audience by performing an impromptu strip tease. She later wrote senseless, suicidal messages on her web site. She explained it away as exhaustion. She took some time out and returned with an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show. She also released her album Charmbracelet but it failed to impress. On the show she explained how the pressures of work, having to fly between Los Angeles and New York to film the disastrous Glitter took a toll on her. She also claimed that she suffered from insomnia.

But she made a complete turnaround in 2005 with the release of The Emancipation of Mimi. It was a stunning comeback that won her several Grammy Awards including Best Contemporary R&B album and Best R&B song for We Belong Together. She recently released E=MC2. Along with getting favourable reviews, she is unofficially competing with Madonna for the title of best female pop artist. She is poised to overtake music icons like Elvis Presley and the Beatles on the singles and album charts. She is making history even as she looks like she is nowhere close to getting done.

Carey in her more recent albums has resorted to experimenting with different genres and using that glorious voice of hers. She has definitely aged since the days she could make her voice soar and stretch. But she has matured and mellowed and her voice reflects that. She is here to carry on.

CANNES 2008: TENNEESSEE REVIEW/DOWNLOAD SNEAK PEAKS

Cannes 2008: Tennessee Review Back in 2001, soul superstar Mariah Carey had a bit of a funny turn in the wake of releasing her box office flop Glitter - a film which put the word corny into, erm... popcorny.

"Carey can act after a fashion, though dialogue gives her trouble," noted TV Guide magazine in the US.

Well, despite that setback, the singer has ventured back onto the silver screen in a movie called Tennessee and, with a low-key Cannes premiere last night, there was really no other option for our evening's entertainment.

Tennessee is a good old-fashioned road movie, where travelling along an actual highway is a metaphor for making progress along your personal journey of life.

Mariah plays a waitress who - would you believe it? - wants to break into music. She gets picked up by the film's heroes and accompanies them to Nashville, where they hope to find their estranged father.

Amazingly, Mariah is the best thing in it. Her understated, downbeat performance is so natural that pretty soon you stop wondering whether Busta Rhymes will pop up for a guest rap.

And for someone famed as an image-obsessed diva, Carey has no problem playing a character who dresses down in dowdy clothes with greasy, toussled hair. She even carries a little extra weight compared to her normal svelte image.

Carey is so good, in fact, that the film feels rather flat when she's off-screen. The denouement, which is presumably supposed to be a heart-rending tear-jerker, kind of passed me by.

Maybe we wrote Carey's film career off too soon?

Below, you can download a .ZIP file which features sneak peaks of the movie and interviews with Mariah about her role in it.

ASK BILLBOARD: "BYE BYE" TO SAY "HI HI" TOP 10 SOON

I'm a big Mariah Carey fan, and am incredibly shocked at the downward slide of her new single "Bye Bye" on the Billboard Hot 100.

It was the Hot Shot Debut (at No. 23) a few weeks ago, and her highest debut in years. Why do you think it has lost popularity? Does it have a chance to even make it into the top 10? -- Carlos Anino

Keith Caulfield from Ask Billboard replies:

    Don't panic!

"Bye Bye" is headed back up the Billboard Hot 100. On the chart dated May 24, it zips from No. 38 to No. 27. Its radio airplay has been increasing over the past few weeks, so it should only continue to go higher.

The song debuted so high a couple weeks ago due to strong digital download sales. However, at the time, the airplay of the song wasn't big enough to keep the song from sliding down the Hot 100 in the ensuing weeks.

But, all is right in the world now, and "Bye Bye" should say "Hi Hi" to the top 10 quite soon.

CAREY, CANNON CLASH OVER BABY PLANS

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have reportedly clashed over plans to have a baby together. According to the National Enquirer, the popstar is desperate to begin a family with her new lover, while Cannon wants to take their relationship slowly.

A source said: "Mariah says her biological clock is ticking and she wants a baby immediately. Nick tries waving off Mariah's baby fixation as only natural, but he's in a sweat. He expected them to start a family, just not in such a hurry."

Cannon's half-brother Reuben confirmed earlier this week that the actor would like to have children with Carey at some point in the future. The couple wed in the Bahamas on April 30 following a two-month whirlwind romance.

    MARIAH CAREY PREGNANT?

Mariah Carey and new husband Nick Cannon have fueled rumors they're set to start a family after one of Mimi's assistants reportedly called LA based Petit Tresor to chat about nursery decor. A source said that the assistant asked the store if they could send fabric samples and if its designers could work with the theme of butterflies.

Petit Tresor have just finished decorating another show-biz nursery for the Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony twins. Despite the preparations, Mariah's manager, Benny Medina, insists the 38-year-old is not pregnant, although Mimi has been quoted saying that having children is "part of the whole purpose of getting married".

These new revelations come just a few weeks after Mariah admitted her and MTV star Nick Cannon had got married in the Bahamas.

    MARIAH's EX "SHATTERED" BY MARRIAGE

Mariah Carey’s former boyfriend of four years is ’shattered’ over the revelation she wed new man, Nick Cannon, after just two months of dating.

The 38-year-old reportedly ended her romance with music producer, Mark Sudack, at the beginning of the year. Sudack had even worked on Carey’s latest album ‘E=MC2′.

‘Everyone is scared to call him because no one knows what to say,’ a friend of his told the mag.

‘He never thought she would go off and marry someone else. He’s heartbroken and shocked.’

Meanwhile Carey, 38, says, ‘Everyone’s calling me M.C.C’, which stands for Mariah Carey Cannon.

    NURSERY TIME FOR MARIAH CAREY

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon could be infanticipating. We hear the newlyweds are already planning a nursery. Yesterday, one of Carey's assistants called L.A.'s chic baby boutique Petit Tresor to talk about preparing for a little roommate. According to our eavesdropper, Mariah's office asked if the store could send fabric samples and if its designers could work with the theme of - you guessed it - butterflies! Word is the Petit crew is sending pictures of the nursery they just finished for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's twins. Mariah's manager, Benny Medina, assures us that the 38-year-old songbird, who wed the 27-year-old Cannon on April 30, is not pregnant. Three weeks ago, Carey told OK! magazine that she was in no hurry to start a family "because of childhood traumatic stuff". But since walking down the aisle with Cannon, she said having children is "part of the whole purpose of getting married". A friend of the couple tells us Carey had said she was working on a concept to make Cannon's L.A. home more comfy for a lady with a whole lot of shoes and dresses. But apparently, she's also thinking about cribs and changing tables. Her assistant asked if Petit Tresor could shut the store for a private conference next time she's in L.A.

MARIAH & NICK AT SIX FLAGS

  • Inside Nick's Magical Night with Mariah
Entertainment Tonight and its correspondent Kevin Frazier were inside Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA, where Nick Cannon surprised his bride Mariah Carey with an ultra-exclusive reception.

Only HipHollywood.com has all of the details:

Cannon shut down the park, at a cost in the mid-six figure range, so that he and Mariah could party with 100 friends and family. Nick had the park decorated in pink and purple balloons with Carey's signature butterflies also a fixture. Mariah's album was playing throughout the park the entire evening, and each guest received a pink or red Superman cape as a gift.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. and Six Flags security helped secure the 260 acre Theme Park from prying paparazzi, while Cannon, Carey and their guests played games and rode roller coasters, each time the new bride and groom riding in the front car.

The couple arrived a little after 8PM, greeted friends, then headed straight to the parks' flying rollercoaster, Tatsu. On the way Nick shot baskets with his buddies as his wife cheered him on. After a wild ride, the couple wanted to go again, but instead headed to the reception to greet guests. At the reception, they milled about with friends and family, all the while, holding hands and embracing in between conversations.

After about a 30 minute break the couple and about 20 guests headed off to enjoy more rides. Nick and Mariah were very playful and on more than one occasion he carried her on his back. They road 4 other coasters, multiple times, almost always sitting in the front seat, before finally calling it a night.

Kevin presented the couple with a blender as a wedding gift and Mariah said it was perfect for her protein shakes to lose weight and Nick's to gain.

    VIBE MAGAZINE: BODY LANGUAGE

Mariah Carey has been pop's queen--the real queen--for nearly 20 years, and she's not giving up the throne. But at M.C.'s lavish Caribbean birthday bash, Shanel Odum witnesses the record-shattering diva in all her glory: Calm, cool, and damn-near naked

    Eagle's Landing, Jumby Bay, Antigua.

2 P.M. The heavens above Antigua are as smooth and playful as a handful of cobalt marbles. But on the island below, a frenzy is brewing. Mariah Carey's $12,500-a-night villa on the 300-acre tropical island is alive--almost antsy--with anticipation. Rob Payne, her stone-faced bodyguard, slips into a cotton tee as he escorts a lipstick-toting assistant into the ballroom-size living room, where a video crew is gingerly unpacking.

"Absolutely no one can go through those doors there," booms Payne, who's built like an All-Pro defensive end. "That's Mariah's bedroom. And smokers better light up in the front yard--she'll have a fit if she smells cigarettes!"

A gang of hairstylists, fashion assistants, photographers, and makeup artists race around the open-air bungalow, each on their own mission to please. Almost everyone else in the all-but-humble abode frantically taps away at a MacBook, BlackBerry, or iPhone.

    Then, disaster strikes.
    The manicurist is missing.

But there's no it's-my-party-and-I'll-bitch-if-I-want-to tantrum from the illustrious pop icon. The bluster is coming from a couple of men. It's Benny Medina, Mariah's longtime über-manager (the man known for his super-successful, hands-on approach with clients Jennifer Lopez, Usher, and Tyra Banks), and Michael Richardson, her dapper, Cockney-spouting tour manager. They're both outraged by the potential beauty crisis.

"If this slows us up," Medina roars, sporting a pink Polo and matching shorts, "I'm going to get really upset."

While waiting for Carey for more than 90 minutes, the resort's lone manicurist bounced.

"Wehw, wot villa is she in, den?" demands Richardson in a thick British accent. He whips out his cell and makes the necessary heads roll.

It's still early and the estate is already in a state of chaos. The Grammy winner? The diva? The sex symbol? She sleeps through the whole thing.

Somewhere on the same island, a very tan Paul McCartney strolls lazily across the starfish-studded beach. The 65-year-old Beatle has retired from hitmaking, but continues to hold the title--along with the rest of his iconic English pop band--for the most No. 1 singles on Billboard's Hot 100. With 20 chart-toppers, The Beatles hold the only record left for Mariah to shatter. This spring she skated past Elvis Presley with "Touch My Body," her 18th No. 1 single.

But it hasn't been all stardust and rainbows for Mariah. In 2001, what was supposed to be her film breakout, Glitter (20th Century Fox), fizzled. That was followed by a well-publicized 2001 breakdown on the set of MTV's TRL. Who could forget the strip tease? And the ice cream cart?

Then came liberation. Her last album, The Emancipation of Mimi (Island, 2005), sold nearly six million copies. It was that kinetic endeavor that helped Mariah reclaim fans that had dismissed her as a casualty of her own ambition. Continuing in the same triumphant vein, E=MC², aka Emancipation Equals Mariah Carey to the Second Power (Island), her 11th studio album, is a beautifully addictive lesson in dichotomy. Her claims of deliverance and growth have merit, but the butterfly-obsessed star still vacations in Neverland. The Mariah- and Swizz Beatz-produced "O.O.C."--as in "Out Of Control"--proves she hasn't lost touch with her youthful spirit. The song is bursting with instant messenger acronyms. "Side Effects" shows a deeper side of Mimi: Candidly detailing the aftermath of her tumultuous marriage to Sony Music bossman Tommy Mottola, she paints the picture of a woman stung by real heartbreak. Though she's sacrificed her famed vocal acrobatics--dolphins are still the only mammals that can top her five-octave range--for a greater pop presence, her limber tone and midrange belting work better with the album's synth-heavy beats and tickling treble. If anything, Mariah is the ultimate chameleon. She's evolved from sweet, soul-stirring ballads to booming hip hop hooks; from floor-skirting gowns to hot shorts and patent pumps. And most recently, to the Pistol Panties bikini she's rocking--with confidence--today.

5 P.M. The afternoon turns to evening, and a twister descends on Eagle's Landing. The cyclone hits the beach in a blur of blush brushes, hair spritz, and double-sided tape. Even the manicurist has returned, but only to remain on-call. She doesn't paint even one of Mariah's digits. So much drama, so little action. Every few moments, there's a glimpse of the eye of the storm--it's Mariah, emancipated. The 5-foot-9 mirage prances past the overly attentive pack and heads toward a rickety boardwalk, which instantly transforms into her runway. A magenta silk robe whips against those endless, copper legs; black Christian Louboutin heels stab the sand; a wild halo of corkscrew curls flies...

"Can we get some towels and a Diet Coke ASAP?" Medina demands for his artist, to no one in particular. The throng of attendants freeze in their tracks, eyes darting nervously from one person to the next, afraid to abandon their assigned duties but more afraid to disobey. After some confused stares, Mariah's longtime personal assistant Melissa Ruderman, races off to fetch the items.

At the end of the petite dock, Mariah breezily tiptoes through a knot of rocket wires as technicians--hired to prep the evening's fireworks display in honor of M.C.'s 38th birthday--pace anxiously. Their hand-wringing and panicked warnings float out to sea, unheeded by the singer. She's too busy hamming it up as if she were on a tightrope, occasionally grabbing at her manager's outstretched arm. Even traipsing across a minefield of pyrotechnics. Mariah is perfectly poised. Delicate. Dainty. Ultra femme. Constantly aware of how she looks, she makes sure a wisp of hair is swept across her forehead. She's rarely caught tilting her head to the right--the right's her best side.

"I'm That Chick"--a swinging future single from E=MC²--drifts above the photographers' encouraging banter, and everyone's feeling it. As the album flows seamlessly from dance track to love song, Mariah sways to the sound of her own voice. She doesn't need for this record to be a smash, but it inevitably will be. She'll stay relevant. She'll stay rich. She's that chick.

As she perches on a sharp formation of rocks, Medina simultaneously tends to her dangling sandal and regulates minutiae.

"Can we get more volume in her hair?"
    "Robe, please!"
    "Give me more eyes, Mariah..."

For the next setup, she saunters through the water in a bronze Ashley Paige one-piece and a pair of 4-inch heels, grinning like a pageant contestant. Miss Mimi perpetually flirts with an imaginary audience and doesn't stop winking, pouting, and writhing in the waves even for a moment. Even without an ogling entourage. Even when the photographer takes a break to change his flash. She rarely stops hip-popping and sashaying. And she looks damn good doing it.

"I'm getting really nervous about the overhead lighting," she raspily purrs, glancing down at her washboard abs. "My tummy... can I get some lighting from underneath instead, please?"

There are a few final flashes, followed by revelry from the crew. The shoot wraps, and party time is about to begin.

After tying a tiny, white button-up above her belly button, a chrome-colored, American Apparel bikini becomes Mariah's birthday suit. By now, she's a real-life Malibu Barbie, and one very few going-on-40-year-olds who can get away with rocking a belly chain and a gemstone butterfly appliqué on the small of her back. Her record weight loss is undeniable--Mariah is clearly more sculpted than scalpeled. But it's not just her blow-up doll aesthetic; it's her unapologetically larger-than-lush lifestyle--and M.C.'s B-day is no exception.

7:30 P.M. Mariah Carey's 38th birthday banquet is a Sweet 16 dream. Beckoning palms welcome guests to the entrance of the veranda, where a spouting stone fountain sits on Moroccan tile. The scene inside is a strawberry-frosted pubescent fantasy; purple, pink, and white balloons dance in the balmy Caribbean breeze floating through the spacious flat. Fuchsia feather boas drip from the arms of every chair. Kitschy gold crowns, tiaras, and noisemakers adorn each place setting. French doors are slung open to frame a cascading infinite pool that overlooks the Caribbean sea a dive's length away. This is how a superstar does her born day.

In the Mediterranean-style kitchen, a culinary crew decked in freshly pressed coats and stark white chef's caps are prepping pots. The scent of roast chicken waltzes in the wind. And then Mariah's posse begins to appear. Longtime confidante Shawntae "Da Brat" Harris breezes past, swimming in oversized jeans, a red tee, and a bandana over bead-studded braids. Recent acquaintance/music video director ("Bye Bye") Nick Cannon grabs his laptop and goes to the buffet to fix a plate. As her guests fawn, Mariah drifts from friend to friend, beaming and blowing kisses.

Suddenly, the sounds of silverware clinking and Perrier hissing are interrupted by a pop. Louis Roederer Cristal--not calorie-packed hard liquor, mind you--is served by a staff of three. Outstretched flutes salute the birthday girl as her nephew Shawn McDonald, 30, an attorney, delivers an eloquent toast. He salutes her generosity--Mariah paid for his Cornell undergrad and Harvard Law education. According to McDonald, Mariah's real beauty--the side she protects from the paparazzi--can't be photographed. "She's more like a sister to me," he says, as they clutch each other affectionately. The intimate party lets out a chorus of awwws.

As soon as McDonald finishes his speech, the sky erupts in a fiery pink explosion, a dazzling fireworks display. Someone in the small crowd shrieks in surprise--but not Mariah. She's peacefully sipping on a glass of champagne. She seems high on life. It's just another day for the birthday girl. Everything's a production--for her entourage. Like the pink conflagration overhead, Mariah fits and floats above it, unscathed by the pandemonium. + 10 images

IS NICK CANNON RIGHT FOR MARIAH CAREY?

Just weeks after the "low-key" wedding, one still asks the question did Mariah Carey make the right choice by tying the knot with rapper/actor/producer Nick Cannon who many are now calling a "fame seeker"? According to this week's issue of In Touch Magazine, Carey, a multi-platinum selling artist married the MTV "Wild-n-Out" star without a pre-nuptial agreement. This after dating for just a few weeks leading many to believe that the relationship will fail sooner than later.

Cannon, known for his many high profile breakups including his failed engagement to model Selita Ebanks after just five months last year, has been coined a "fame seeker" by the magazine. He is reportedly infatuated with high profile romances and was quoted saying "Halle Berry would be a good upgrade" in 2005 after he broke up with pop star Christina Milian, who claimed the "Dime Piece" rapper cheated on her throughout their three year relationship.

Milian, later released a record aimed at the star in 2006 entitled "Who's Gonna Ride" fuming about his cheating - "The whole time with different girls, not just one, but different girls. He said to me that these
