Mariah Carey & Taylor Swift Have Something In Common
Published: Alison on August 12th, 2010. Comment? [1]
Taylor Swift becomes the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 to debut multiple tracks in the top five during a calendar year, as “Mine” will enter the chart at No. 3 once the final ranking is released tomorrow morning (Aug. 12).
“Mine” falls just shy of the debut and peak of “Today Was a Fairytale,” which landed in the runner-up spot on the chart dated February 6. Mariah Carey is the only other female with multiple top five debuts in a single year, opening at No. 1 with both “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men, in 1995.

Rihanna Ties With Mariah, Gaga, Beyonce For Most Pop Songs No. 1s
Published: Alison on August 9th, 2010. Comment? [1]
With a 2-1 lift on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart for Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” the song’s featured artist Rihanna ties the mark for most No. 1s in the Nielsen BDS-based survey’s 18-year history.
Rihanna joins Mariah Carey, who tallied six chart leaders between 1993 and 2005, Beyoncé (2003-10) and Lady Gaga (2009-10). The latter two acts equaled Carey’s sum when their “Telephone” reached No. 1 in March.
(Carey’s first eight singles in 1990-92, six of which topped the Billboard Hot 100, predate the Pop Songs chart’s launch).

Ask Billboard: Who “Is” the ’90s?
Published: Alison on July 24th, 2010. Comment? [5]
Artists who define decades, based on not only success, but pop culture impact. Of course, many artists span multiple decades, and perhaps this is subjective. But, to me, Frank Sinatra “is” the ’40s, Elvis Presley the ’50s, the Beatles the ’60s, the Bee Gees the ’70s and Michael Jackson the ’80s.
So, who “is” the ’90s? I’m not sure I can put the face on the decade. Nirvana maybe? Kurt Cobain and company perhaps best define the grunge genre that so took hold that decade, and Cobain’s early death put a mysterious stamp on the era. And the ’00s? Perhaps Eminem?
Billboard’s Gary Trust:
These are some great questions, and what perhaps makes them so fun is that there’s no definitive answer.
Joel Whitburn’s most recent version of “Top Pop Singles,” which chronicles the first 50 years of the Hot 100 (1958-2008), names the following artists as the top performers of each decade:
’60s: the Beatles
’70s: Elton John
’80s: Michael Jackson ’90s: Mariah Carey
’00s: Nelly
In Billboard’s 1999 year-end issue, the combined song and album decade placement for the ’90s shows as follows:
1, Mariah Carey
2, Janet Jackson
3, Garth Brooks
4, Boyz II Men
5, Celine Dion
While digesting all these rankings, since you asked, here are the artists that come to my mind when I think of each decade’s top performers. ’50s: Presley. ’60s: the Beatles. ’70s: John. ’80s: Madonna. ’90s: Carey. ’00s: Eminem.
I choose Carey for the ’90s based on her 14 Hot 100 No. 1s during the decade, a run that includes time spent at the top spot in every year in that span. While grunge, and alternative in general, arguably reached a pop culture zenith in the ’90s, the genre’s biggest hits often did not make the impacts on the Hot 100 that one might expect. (Nirvana’s biggest Hot 100 entry, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” peaked at No. 6).
Hot weather plus nostalgia makes for a potent mix (or mixtape). Billboard has combed the Hot 100 for the summer months of each of the past 25 years to bring you the top ten jams pumping out of stereos everywhere for the last quarter century.
These hot tunes are ranked based on each track’s performance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the summer and are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least.
Mariah appears the most (along with Rihanna) with 5 of her songs making it to Billboard’s “Songs of the Summer 1985 – 2009″ Top 10 lists. Of the 5, two are ranked at #1.

Mariah Carey’s 2005 hit “We Belong Together” is declared the most successful song by a female artist in Billboard history.

“We Belong Together” Receives Another ‘Decade’ Award
Published: Alison on June 27th, 2010. Comment? [1]
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) hosted its 23rd annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. The star-studded event, which was attended by over 650 leading songwriters, recording artists and music industry notables honored the songwriters and publishers of the most performed ASCAP songs on the 2009 R&B/Hip-Hop, Rap and Gospel charts.
Top awards were handed out to:
• Songwriters of the Year (tie): Ne-Yo, C. “Tricky” Stewart and The-Dream
• Song of the Decade: “We Belong Together” written by Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin and Manuel Seal
• Top Rap Song: “Best I Ever Had” written by Matthew “Boi-1da” Samuels
• Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song: “Blame It” written by Christopher Henderson, Brandon “Note” Melancon, The-Dream, C. “Tricky” Stewart and Nate Walka
• Top Gospel Song: “Souled Out” written by Ernest Estee Bullock
• Publisher of the Year: EMI Music Publishing
Atlanta rapper T.I. presented the Song of the Decade Award to fellow Atlantans Johnta Austin, Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal for their work on Mariah Carey’s massive hit, “We Belong Together.” The song topped the Billboard charts, won two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and was named ASCAP Pop Song of the Year in 2006.
Here are the top 10 songs with the highest radio audiences, according to Nielsen BDS (listed by each title’s peak audience week). You correctly guessed the top song on the list:
Peak Audience, Title, Artist, Peak Date
212.1 million, “We Belong Together,” Mariah Carey, July 9, 2005
196.3 million, “Irreplaceable,” Beyonce, Jan. 20, 2007
192.5 million, “No One,” Alicia Keys, Dec. 22, 2007
189.6 million, “Let Me Love You,” Mario, Feb. 5, 2005
175.6 million, “Gold Digger,” Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx, Oct. 22, 2005
172.8 million, “Yeah!,” Usher featuring Lil Jon & Ludacris, April 17, 2004
172.3 million, “My Boo,” Usher and Alicia Keys, Nov. 20, 2004
171.4 million, “Be Without You,” Mary J. Blige, April 1, 2006
170.2 million, “In Da Club,” 50 Cent, March 29, 2003
167.7 million, “Dilemma,” Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland, Sept. 7, 2002
It’s not a coincidence that the songs above all scored success at pop and R&B/hip-hop radio. As the two formats have traditionally enjoyed strong Arbitron ratings in large markets, tracks that cross over between them have a greater chance at registering the highest overall audience totals on the Radio Songs survey.
Here are the acts that have started with the longest streaks of Hot 100 top 10s beginning with their first chart entries:
13, Lionel Richie (1981-87)
12, George Michael (1985-90)
11, Mariah Carey (1990-94)
9, New Kids on the Block (1988-90)
7, Air Supply (1980-82)
7, Taylor Dayne (1988-90)
7, Expose (1987-90)
7, Gary Lewis and the Playboys (1965-66)
7, the Lovin’ Spoonful (1965-67)
7, Richard Marx (1987-89)
7, Monica (1995-99)
7, Ricky Nelson (1958-59)
Carey came close to logging an even lengthier top 10 streak, as, after her 12th Hot 100 charted title, “Anytime You Need a Friend,” peaked at No. 12, she rebounded with top 10s in her next six visits. In all, 17 of her first 18 and 20 of her first 22 Hot 100 entries scaled the top 10.
No artist has entered the top 10 with at least seven consecutive out-of-the-box Hot 100 charted titles since Monica in 1999.
In an era where album cuts can reach the chart due to even a week’s-worth of robust digital sales, it could be difficult for another artist to accomplish such a streak anytime soon.
